Why consider a wireless fire alarm?
In a conventional wired installation, every detector, call point and alarm device may require cabling and containment. In an occupied or sensitive building, the cost is not just the cable—it is the access, decoration, disruption and time spent working through finished areas.
A professionally designed wireless system can reduce much of that impact. Devices communicate by monitored radio links while retaining supervised operation, fault reporting and standby power arrangements appropriate to the system.
Wireless does not mean an assortment of domestic battery alarms. A commercial wireless fire alarm is an engineered life-safety system with compatible control equipment, monitored devices, batteries and defined maintenance requirements. An honest recommendation
When wireless is not the right answer
We do not recommend wireless on every project. Radio surveys, building construction, device numbers, maintenance requirements, environmental conditions and whole-life cost all matter.
A wired or hybrid system may be more suitable where cable routes are already available, the building is being refurbished, the radio environment is difficult or the long-term maintenance case favours wiring. SES will explain the options rather than treating wireless as an automatic upgrade.
How the process works
Our wireless fire alarm process
- Survey and design basis — we inspect the building, establish the required category and coverage, identify access constraints and consider the radio environment.
- System proposal — the quotation sets out the equipment, device locations, system type, installation assumptions, certification and ongoing maintenance requirements.
- Low-disruption installation — we coordinate access and programme devices to minimise time in occupied areas. Every device is labelled and recorded as part of the system documentation.
- Commissioning and handover — the system is tested, the client is shown how to operate it and the relevant records are provided.
- Planned maintenance — wireless systems require routine inspection and battery management just like wired systems require routine inspection of cables and devices. We can schedule the ongoing visits and maintain the service history.

Are wireless fire alarms compliant with British Standards?
They can be. Compliance depends on the complete design, equipment, installation, commissioning and maintenance—not simply whether devices are wired or wireless. We design the solution around the applicable part of BS 5839 and the building's requirements.
Do wireless fire alarms rely only on batteries?
Wireless field devices normally use monitored batteries, while the control equipment has its own mains and standby-power arrangements. Low-battery and communication faults are supervised and reported by a properly designed system.
Will the radio signal work through thick walls?
That must be established for the actual building. Construction, distance, interference and device positioning all affect radio performance. Repeaters or alternative arrangements may be needed, which is why a proper survey matters.
Are wireless systems maintenance-free?
No. They require planned servicing, functional testing and battery replacement in accordance with the system design and manufacturer's instructions.
Can wireless devices be added to an existing wired system?
Sometimes. Hybrid or interface options depend on the existing panel, protocol and design. We will inspect the system before recommending an extension.
